The Biblical Response to “Gay Christianity” is Excommunication

The newest liberal heresy is to proclaim that homosexual lusts form the basis of a legitimate Christian identity, and that these lusts can be nursed as long as you don’t indulge them to the point of committing any detestable acts. Thanks be to God, Who has given us His perfect Word. In the providence of God, the Holy Spirit saw fit to specifically condemn a heresy that wouldn’t arise for 2,000 years!

“Now I want to remind you, although you once fully knew it, that Jesus, who saved a people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe. And the angels who did not stay within their own position of authority, but left their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of the great day— just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which likewise indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire, serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire. (Jude’s epistle, emphasis mine)

It’s not just gay sex that brought judgment on Sodom and Gomorrah. They didn’t receive the punishment of eternal fire only for their sexual immorality.

No, God has declared His judgment upon them because they pursued unnatural desire. Knowing this, there can be no question that anyone who promotes Gay Christianity is preaching heresy. To say that homosexuals and “same-sex attracted Christians” are best described as “sexual minorities” is to suggest that the Lord Jesus was wrong to “destroy those who did not believe” and that Sodom and Gomorrah should be seen as beleaguered minorities who have been oppressed and mistreated by the stodgy fundamentalists in the Trinity who failed to properly “promote human flourishing.”

In His perfect wisdom, it appears that the King of Kings thinks that human flourishing is best promoted by raining fire down on those who pursue unnatural desire.

The spirit of the antichrist

This is why every speaker at the Revoice Conference should be excommunicated from his church for being transparently out of step with the Gospel. Before I go further, let me stress that I said “speaker” on purpose. Even an abominable conference such as Revoice will probably attract a few lost sheep. There will likely be at least a few confused Christians in attendance who need loving guidance from their elders.

But conference speakers are not confused. Teachers incur a stricter judgment (James 3). Jesus said that if you cause even a little one to stumble, it would be better to have a millstone tied around your neck and you be thrown in the ocean. That’s the state of these conference speakers. In the words of the Apostle:

By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already. Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. They are from the world; therefore they speak from the world, and the world listens to them. We are from God. Whoever knows God listens to us; whoever is not from God does not listen to us. (John’s First Epistle, emphasis mine)

It’s striking that Holy Scripture specifically tells us that false teachers who work from the spirit of the antichrist would “speak from the world.” Here we have the breathed-out Word of God telling us that false teachers are going to arise, and they’re going to use the vocabulary of unbelievers. The Apostles warned us, long before anyone ever came up with the phrase “Sexual Minorities.”

If these conference speakers had good elders in their churches, those elders would be demanding immediate, public repentance. If they had good elders, the excommunication process would have already started. It is a scandal that these false teachers are being allowed to devour the sheep with impunity.

It gets worse: the elders and denominational leaders who allow this to go unopposed have their own warnings from the Lord Jesus:

I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. He who is a hired hand and not a shepherd, who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. He flees because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep. (John’s Gospel)

Let us pray that the Lord of the Harvest would send out laborers. Let us pray that God would raise up faithful shepherds who are willing to lay down their lives, and who care more about the sheep they tend than their own celebrity status. Finally, let us pray that God would soften the hearts of the leaders of the PCA (whose Covenant Seminary is closely linked to this conference). It’s time for them to love these conference speakers enough to hand them over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh (I Corinthians 5). Let us pray that they would repent before having to be excommunicated. Failing that, let’s pray that they would repent after being excommunicated, so we might receive them back with joy.

In all of this, let us entrust ourselves to the One who is able to keep us from stumbling. My only hope in life or death is, in the words of the Heidelberg Catechism:

That I with body and soul, both in life and death, am not my own, but belong unto my faithful Savior Jesus Christ; who, with his precious blood, hath fully satisfied for all my sins, and delivered me from all the power of the devil; and so preserves me that without the will of my heavenly Father, not a hair can fall from my head; yea, that all things must be subservient to my salvation, and therefore, by his Holy Spirit, he also assures me of eternal life, and makes me sincerely willing and ready, henceforth, to live unto him.
